Some philanthropists give “matching funds.” For instance, a local Bikur Cholim organization raises $50,000; a donor contributes another $50,000 in matching funds.
The message in matching donations is “to the extent that you show you care, I’ll show that I care.”
When a Jew raises the level of compassion in his life, Hashem becomes the matching donor.
When bad weather forced a New York-Israel flight to land in Paris, 12-year-old Avi Rubin was scared. His big treat—a trip to his grandparents in Jerusalem for Sukkos—was becoming a nightmare.
Moshe Birnbaum had been seated next to Avi on the plane. He saw the boy’s panic.
“Don’t worry,” he said. “You stick with me. I’ll make sure you get everything you need.”
Moshe called Avi’s parents on his cell phone and explained the situation. He promised to take care of Avi.
When they hung up the phone, Mr. Rubin said to his wife, “I’d give that guy the world if I could.”
Hashem, our Father, delights in seeing us take care of His children. Therefore, He “matches” our level of compassion with His own. There is no greater source of protection for the Jewish people than our desire to protect one another .
